Architectural Inspiration from Life Beyond the Office

At Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, the continuation of our team’s design journey often inspires us to venture beyond the confines of our office. This summer, that expedition took us to the Powers Art Center in Carbondale, Colorado. This architectural treasure of the mid-valley doesn't merely house the contemporary art collection of John G. and Kimiko Powers, it also amplifies their legacy through a stunning synergy of design and nature.

And so, we ventured forth from our Basalt office amidst a summer downpour, keen to absorb the architectural wisdom and creative inspiration imbued within the museum. Ironically, just as we were about to leave, a power outage set the stage for our trip. We ventured forth undeterred as the lights flickered back on and undulating rainstorms served as an backdrop to this little adventure.

At the Powers Art Center, we arrived at the sight of emerald pastures cocooned in misty mountains, framed within a massive concrete pergola constructed of 13 columns stretched over a glassy pool. The rainfall had transformed the pool beneath the pergola into a pristine canvas, mirroring the grey skies and capturing the rare spectacle of rain in usually sundrenched Colorado.

The crisp lines defined by the pergola structure position the landscape within a defined frame, guiding our eyes beyond the pergola into the rolling landscape of pasture and peaks. The interplay between landscape, architecture, and art becomes intentionally poetic with a visual illusion of simplicity that we could relate to – something our team deeply understands through years of experience designing modern architectural structures.

Designed by Hiroshi Nanamori of ArchiPrime Inc., Tokyo, the Powers Art Center is a seamless testament to minimalistic beauty emerging from the local landscape. The museum's spatial orchestra of indoor and outdoor spaces resonated with our team with its intertwined tale of stories and legacies harmonizing with the surrounding environment. The museum’s design also serves as a model of sustainability, integrating solar and geothermal systems, as well as using local sandstone and granite building materials – an effort that mirrors Z Group’s ongoing dedication to fostering sustainable design initiatives amid modern architectural endeavors.

Venturing inside, we spread through the museum, gazing at pieces by the likes of Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Issey Miyake, amongst other venerated artists.

Works by collaborative, internationally renowned duo Christo and Jeane Claude were on also display, including Valley Curtain, a giant, orange curtain suspended above Rifle Gap that took years to plan and execute. Randy, Senior Associate at Z Group, experienced this piece firsthand having grown up in Rifle during 1972. During this time, Christo befriended Randy’s father and gave the family a piece of the nylon curtain as a gift. A similar piece of nylon was on display at Powers alongside photography and sketches documenting the temporal artwork. Randy shared that experiencing this piece as a kid was his first exposure to the art and design world beyond the limits of his hometown. He credits this experience with inspiring him to create his own art later in life.  These unique stories shed new light on how art can influence individuals and communities in profound, lifelong ways.

Our Friday afternoon excursion, a mere 15-minute journey from the office, invigorated our team spirit, sparking lively chats around art, design, construction, and nature in a candid, relaxed setting. These visits to museums and other exhibitions and venues inspire creativity and artistic expression, allowing us to infuse fresh perspectives into our design process, rooted in our shared narrative of interpreting dreams and legacies into ethereal structures for generations to come.

So, where to next? Stay tuned - our next architectural expedition might just be around the corner! Filled with curiosity and a passion for design excellence, we'll continue to explore significant, inspiring spaces together. After all, at Z Group Architecture & Interior Design, the interplay of architecture, art, and nature forms our collective journey and legacy.
